Nur found it on Changi Beach at age five. Aminah wanted to go and Nur wouldn't move. He was looking for more. He waited twenty minutes crouched in the sand, turning stones, rejecting the ones that didn't pass the touch test. The selection criteria are his alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt recess he does the same. He looks for things on the ground while the others run. When he finds something that interests him, he pockets it in his overalls without comment. At home, he washes it under the tap and places it in the tin alongside the rest. The tin gets heavier every month. If it was ever lost, something would really break.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e## Stones that fit in a pocket\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLots of six-year-olds collect stones (not all of them in the same way, though). What's different about Nur is the precision. He doesn't pick up just any stone. Each one has to pass through his hands, his nose, an inspection that can last thirty-five seconds. The stones he chooses are always small, always smooth, always with some detail of color or texture that sets them apart. A vein, a shine, a shape that reminds him of something without quite being it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overalls pocket is the first filter. If the stone fits there without bulging, it might be a candidate. The second filter is the tin. When Nur gets home and opens the Khong Guan lid, he decides where the new piece goes with a seriousness he has for almost nothing else. He moves others, adjusts gaps, changes positions.
