Of the three, the bandana is the only one with a proper name behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWanjiku. Nayna's grandmother. She sold chai and mandazi from a tin-and-wood stall next to Syokimau station, on the southern outskirts of Nairobi, every morning from four thirty. The stall smelled of cardamom, boiled milk, and road dust. Nayna went there after school. Wanjiku taught her two things: how to tie a bandana at your neck — \"for the dust and so they know you work\" — and not to speak if you had nothing to say.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShe died on a Tuesday in August, at 74, while preparing the first chai of the day. Heart attack. Nayna arrived twenty minutes later. The first thing she did was close the stall. The second was take the bandana from around her neck. Red with black dots, cotton washed many times, with that feel that clothes have when they've passed through more hands and more dawns than you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShe tied it around her own neck. She hasn't taken it off since.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the workshop on Lunga Lunga Road, the industrial area of South B where Nayna repairs eight to twelve bikes a week, the bandana picks up grease and red dust like everything else. She washes it on Sundays. By Monday it has a new stain. Sometimes, when she doesn't expect it, a wave of cardamom hits her — someone cooking at a nearby stall, a chai somewhere that isn't the usual place — and her throat tightens for half a second. Then she goes on. She always goes on.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe flowers came later. She started buying them shortly after Wanjiku died, three years ago. Wakulima market, two or three times a week, at five thirty in the morning, before opening the workshop. Red if she can. 150 shillings, sometimes 200 if the stall guy sees in her face that she needs them more today. She puts them in an empty oil can on the workbench. Sometimes the petals fall among the wrenches and bolts: red on metal, something living on something that works. She didn't plan it as a ritual. It just happened and now it's what she does.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you ask why: \"Because I like it.\" If you ask again: nothing. Silence. The flowers are there and the workshop has flowers and that's all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe portrait captures her with all three reds together. Wanjiku's bandana, the fresh flowers, and the leather jacket she bought at the Gikomba secondhand market with the money from her second rebuilt and resold motorcycle. Three layers of red that weren't planned as a set or as an aesthetic decision. They accumulated, one by one, each for a different reason. Nayna doesn't see it as style.
