The industrial zone of Lunga Lunga Road, sheet-metal sheds, red dust when it's dry and red mud when it rains, boda-boda riders coming and going at any hour. Eight to twelve bikes a week, mostly 125cc taxis that break down the way anything breaks down when it works fourteen hours a day. Punctures, brakes, chains, clutches. And she works the way a cheetah hunts, although she'd never use that comparison.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBursts. She can spend four hours straight with an engine without lifting her head. Hands moving with a precision that looks rehearsed but is accumulated instinct — years of Gedore wrenches inherited from her father, a truck mechanic from Athi River who taught her without teaching her, simply by not stopping her — and nights rebuilding a totaled Honda CB125 on the sidewalk with a flashlight clamped between her teeth. She doesn't eat. She doesn't talk. She doesn't stop. Not even Mwangi, the nineteen-year-old apprentice who has been at the workshop for eight months, dares to interrupt those hours.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd then she shuts off.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShe sits on the red stool, drinks half a liter of water in one go, stares into space for five minutes. If the day has been especially long — three bikes finished, a tricky diagnosis, a customer trying to haggle after the work is done — she's capable of closing the workshop at noon, taking a matatu to Naivasha and sitting by the lake for three hours watching flamingos. On Monday she comes back as if nothing happened.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePeople who don't know her think she's unreliable. That she can't be counted on. Those who know her know that's how she works: first she burns, then she cools down. If she doesn't cool down, her hands shake. And if her hands shake, she won't work. Not because she can't, but because she refuses to do something badly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere's a sound she makes when an engine starts clean: a low hum, almost a purr, that comes from her chest without her deciding it. Mwangi calls it \"Nayna's engine.\" She doesn't know he calls it that. Or she knows and says nothing. With Nayna you're never sure how much she knows about what's going on around her. The answer usually is: more than you'd think.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMama Amina, from the chai stall three doors down from the workshop, is the first to notice when Nayna doesn't show up in the morning. She doesn't ask. When Nayna comes back, she serves the usual cup. 50 shillings, standing up, no conversation. Both of them know that's enough.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the back of the workshop there's a 1985 Yamaha SR400, dismantled. It's been that way for eight months. Every piece cleaned, photographed, cataloged. Some she's had custom-made. She's in no hurry. It's not for sale.
